Lady Isobel Barnett

Judi

Hello, my name is Judi Ruedy and I have been a Master Gardener Volunteer for about 20 years and have been involved in a local garden club since 1975. My love for Hostas started a long time ago before I knew anything about growing anything, and Hostas were not in vogue. I created this website specifically for zone 4 Northern gardeners that need help finding perennials specific to their growing area. So much information out there on the web doesn’t apply to our colder growing climate, so I thought I would share my own findings here on this site.

Hello and Thank You for checking out my website!
Well, the very first Hosta that comes to mind is Halcyon! It is a bluish leafed and hardy as ever. I don’t think I ever see bug damage on the leaves. Now, if it is in full sun then it will be greener and just as elegant, but not the blue tinge that fades in too much sun.
Then there is June, which is a sport of Halcyon. June is an excellent specimen. And, Emporus Wu (spelling?) then Sum & Substance the very large Hosta and golden color that shows off all summer. I have several around the house, in an East and South direction. Also, the Lady Isobel Barnett too, but not maybe quite so good as the others.
If you are lucky enough to have at least some shade in the afternoon, you will be mostly happy with these.

I also have heavy soil, clayey (if that is a word) and that makes a big difference. Watering in the summer helps a whole lot too of course. 1″ a week is always recommended.
We here, in West Central Wisconsin had hot and dry weather for few weeks this year in July and August, and mine don’t look great, but will be nice next year again. I just cut the worst off when deadheading.
I also have a Bullet Proof. (newer one) that is looking good. It has how ever, shade half the day. I hope I have helped you some with suggestions.
